The automobile is becoming more popular and also more important for human daily life. Since the car has already been introduced to the entire world, automakers are continuing to develop and add some advanced technology for their product such as parking censer, surrounding view camera, and autopilot which knew as self-driving. And this tech talk will present about the self-driving car. And the reason why I choose this topic is that it is an interesting topic about the new technology that has on the car which we do not need to drive by ourselves meanwhile we can rest through the whole traveling. Furthermore, it also much safer than we drive by ourselves. And this tech talk will cover:
- Briefly of automobile’s history
- How autonomous work
- The benefits of self-driving car

In the late nineteenth century, there was a new innovation of the world’s new vehicle type known as the automobile by German and French men such as Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Nicolaus Otto, and Emile Levassor. After that, in the early twentieth century, there were many new automakers around the European country and American. Afterward, automakers started to invent new technology for more fuel-efficient, less pollution, and safer to equip on their automobile (History.com Editors, 2018). Later on, through the modernize of technology, a new form of the vehicle also being introduced to the world automotive industry which is known as electric car. In 2008, Tesla company introduced their first vehicle named as Roadster. It is the revolutionary of the electric car which is also used to appear in the old day but due to lack of technology, it didn’t introduce to the entire world. Yet, this new electric Tesla Roadster, it has a better battery that can travel around 320 kilometers per single charge; it can speed up to 200 kilometers per hour for its top speed (McFadden, 2018). And recently, there is a new advancement of technology for the automotive industrial which known as the self-driving vehicles.
Currently, there are many models of the car using the self-automation option. There are various types of self-automation options from an automatic braking system with the lane-keeping assist to autonomous driving. According to Here Mobility (n.d.), self-automation has 5 levels of autonomous which are:
- Level 1 – Driving Assistance: The vehicle could only operate one of the automation options at a time
- Level 2 – Partial Driving Automation: At least two automatic features will be operated by the vehicle at the same time (For example steering wheel and cruise control) but it required under the control of people for safety operation
- Level 3 – Conditional Driving Automation: The vehicle will drive and monitor the car by itself meanwhile the driver will feel free to do anything else, yet it required the driver to take control over the vehicle when it alerted
- Level 4 – Highly Automated Driving: It is the stage where the automobile is fully operated as autonomous, yet it just works for some areas or for special circumstances such as traffic jams
- Level 5: The vehicle will be all self-automatic autonomous in every kind of scenario which will be introduced to everyone in the future.
Those operations of the autonomous vehicles are based on their “design details vary, most self-driving systems create and maintain an internal map of their surroundings, based on a wide array of sensors, like radar” (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2018). After that, it will send that information from those sensors through its pathway to control the acceleration, braking system, and steering wheel.
Overall there are a huge benefit of autonomous-driving car such as:
- Safety: It will be much safer for people who use those automatic driving features which compare human-driving. The artificial intelligence will help to reduce some dangerous driving behavior such as over-speed, drug driving and distraction (Coalition for Future Mobility, n.d.)
- Greater Independence: With a fully automated self-driving system, people who disable and elderly would help with their daily life such as transportation which means get to their place without any assist from other (Coalition for Future Mobility, n.d.)
- Lower Consumption: The self-driving system mostly equips on the electric car therefore it can save people money from using gasoline. Furthermore, the electric vehicle will not have lots of spare parts like gasoline vehicles does thus it also saving people money to repair them (Coalition for Future Mobility, n.d.)
- Greater Productivity: Due to it is the self-driving vehicle, so we can do anything that we want while we are on the way such as we can check for news, or tracking our business procession (Coalition for Future Mobility, n.d.)
With this new invention, innovation, and advancement of technology, I am very interested in and wondering about the next revolutionary of the automobile. I hope you could get more knowledge of this new autonomous-driving feature.
